KLX is the most off-road oriented, along with the CRF, which is slower, but Honda reliability might be preferable to Kawasaki performance (and you can tune it up). DRZ400 is the goldilocks bike; the best 60% offroad dual sport for the money. XR650L is the best 50/50, but you pay for it with weight. The KLX is surprisingly smooth through the rev range, all the way to redline, even though the powerplant is considered a ā€œstrokerā€ with 67mm of bore and 66mm of stroke. For comparison, my KTM 250 EXC-F has a bore of 78mm by 52.3mm of stroke yet it feels less refined north of 50 mph than the Kawi. As a 250, the bike is just too soft on the power and no real advantage over my lighter KLR250, in my opinion. What turns me off potentially with the 2009 is the use of the new hardware set for wheels, brakes, etc, that is heavier than before. KLX is probably smoother though but I havenā€™t ridden one, My brother in laws DRZ feels like sitting on a 30 year old lawn mower. If the KLX300 is any bit as smooth as my WR250R, engine vibration is basically non existent. Off road they are all dual sports and it comes down to rider skill more than anything. 6. Share.
