In the endgame, it nets you about 12 mages to act as living artillery. On the other hand choosing the Templars is the "morally evil" choice. Wynne will not join you and you have to kill everyone up there. More Experience at the cost of a healer. In the endgame you get (if I recall correctly) 12 Templars, which are anti-magic knights.

Spirit warrior would also have made slightly more sense than templar for Cassandra. Given what we know of how she got her power. But then again, I think the game really needed a good rebel mage companion and a good rebel templar companion, so they could explain to the player what the mage-templar war is all about.

I could be wrong, but if you side with the templars, they kill all of the mages which would make help from the circle null. To save Connor and side with the templars, you probably have to blood sacrifice Isolde, have Jowan get a mage into the fade and confront Connor's demons. I hope I explained that well enough.
